Alex Honnold is an American professional rock climber from Sacramento, California. He gained worldwide recognition for his free solo ascents and big wall climbs. Some of his climbs involve no ropes or protective gears. In June 2017, Honnold became the first ever to complete the free solo ascent of El Capitan in Yosemite National Park. His journey was documented in the film Free Solo (2018). Honnold’s accolades include the 2018 Piolets d’Or (Golden Ice Axe) for his remarkable contribution to climbing. Honnold was born to Dierdre and Charles Honnold on August 17, 1985, in Sacramento, California. He has a sister named Stasia. Both his parents worked as educators. CAREER

On June 3, 2017, Honnold made history as the first and only person to make the free solo ascent of El Capitan. He successfully completed the Freerider route (2,900 feet) in 3 hours and 56 minutes. Honnold’s impressive feat sparked the documentary film, Free Solo (2018), directed by Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin. The film made $21 million at the box office. Free Solo won multiple awards, including a BAFTA and an Oscar for best documentary film.

In June 2018, Honnold joined forces with Tommy Caldwell to take on the Nose on El Capitan in Yosemite. They managed to complete the 3,000 feet route in under 2 hours (1:58:07).
