A bronze monument depicting a pair of Japanese sugar cane workers stands in Iao Valley’s Kepaniwai Heritage Gardens recently. The sculptures by artist Gayle Bright Appleby were placed on permanent display in the park’s Japanese Garden in 1985 in recognition of the 100th anniversary of the first government contract immigrants from Japan to set foot on these shores. The monument was dedicated on June 19, 1985 by the Maui Japanese community.
