Ralph Norio Masuda, age 75 passed on May 11, 2018 after a vigilant battle of multiple “shitty” ailments. Born in Wailuku, Maui, June 23, 1942 to Yoneaki Masuda and Yukiko Oura – raised in Happy Valley playing in Iao Stream and instigating pranks with his brothers & friends.

Ralph served time in the Army in the 1960’s, graduated on the GI Bill from Cal Poly Tech, Pomona and held multiple positions with the County of Maui through the 1980’s including Deputy Planning Director and Executive Assistant to the Mayor, later serving on multiple Boards and Commissions. He retired from Lana’i Resorts LLC as their VP of Planning & Development. Ralph was a skilled shoreline fisherman, a natural golfer (taking many dollar bets) and happy with a good cup of coffee and a Cuban cigar.

Ralph is survived by his loving wife, Hyong “Yuri” Masuda. His children: Michelle Masuda-Koga (Jason Koga), Barry Masuda and Bryan Masuda. Grandchildren: Dillon and Megan. Brothers: James Mitsuo Masuda and Koki Masuda (Rene). He was predeceased by brothers: Yutaka Masuda and Toshio Masuda.

To the many who knew Ralph and the few he liked, he will not be forgotten. For his children, he is remembered as that “Stubborn, Old “Japanee” Man”.

Our sincerest thanks are relayed to those who have reached out with condolences or provided assistance to our family. Per Ralph’s direction, his ashes were released in private at his favorite fishing place with instructions: “eh, no forget – trow back da first Moi cuz might be me!”
